Our use of the Document Verification Service (DVS)
Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) uses the Document Verification Service (DVS) to confirm, with your consent, that the information on your identity document matches the original record; this makes it harder for people to use fake documents and helps protect your identity.
The DVS is a secure service operated by Commonwealth and enables us to verify documents directly with the issuers of those documents (for example, verifying a Passport with the Department of Foreign Affairs).
Our obligations
In verifying your document, BDM is required to comply with all relevant legislation, including the Commonwealth's IVS Act 2013, Tasmania's Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1999 and Personal Information Protection Act 2004.
We will only submit information to the DVS with your consent, and only use that information for the purpose of providing services that you have requested.
We will retain the information we receive in accordance with the Births Deaths and Marriages disposal schedule.
We will not disclose information to third parties unless legally required to do so, or with your express consent, and we will ensure that our staff are aware of their privacy and security obligations prior to using the DVS.
You can find out more about our approach to Personal Information Protection by visiting https://www.tas.gov.au/pip
Your rights
You have the right to refuse to consent to the use of the DVS. If you do decline to consent, you may need to verify your identity another way, which may not be as fast or as secure.
Where you can make a complaint
If you would like to make a complaint about how we collect, use, or disclose your information when processing documents through the DVS, you can use the Contact Us page on the BDM website, or email us at bdm@justice.tas.gov.au
If you are not satisfied with our response, you may also complain to Ombudsman Tasmania by emailing ombudsman@ombudsman.tas.gov.au or calling 1800 001 170.
