Register a change of name

Do I need to change my name after marriage, separation or divorce?

You do not need to register your new name with Births, Deaths and Marriages if you:

  • Get married in Australia and take your partner's surname
  • Decide to go back to your surname before marriage

You should provide a copy of your official marriage certificate to the relevant authority (such as the Australian Passport Office) as evidence of your new surname.

If you were married overseas and want to take on your partner's surname, you should contact the relevant authority or business, such as your bank or the Australian Passport Office to see what evidence you need to give them.

Change a name

You can legally change your name or your child's name by applying to Births, Deaths and Marriages Tasmania.

Once your name is changed, you will get a change of name certificate.

This certificate can be used to help prove who you are for legal and official purposes.

If you were born in Tasmania, you can return a birth certificate and receive a new one with the new name.  If you were born in another State or Country, you won't get a new birth certificate.  We recommend registering your name change in the State you were born in so you can request a new birth certificate.

Changing Gender and Name

If you want to register a change of gender and name change at the same time, it may be easier to use the paper forms.  Please contact BDM for advice.

Choose the type of name change you need:

Adult Change of Name - for people 16 and older
