When you undertake a registration or apply for a certificate from Births, Deaths and Marriages Tasmania, the fee you pay covers the cost of the:
- Assessment or processing fee
- Registration and/or certificate fee
- Postage
Mostly, these fees are non-refundable.
This includes if you change your mind, if the event did not occur in Tasmania or if you are unable to comply with the application requirements.
Fees are refundable only as follows:
Priority Fee – Error
- If an application is lodged through our priority service and complies with all requirements, and the priority service is not provided, the priority fee may be refunded.
Change of name and Relationships registrations
- If we have started to process your change of name or relationship registration and you are unable to provide the required information, any certificate and/or postage fees will be refunded. The registration fee is not refundable.
Overpayment
- If you pay an amount exceeding the required fees, the amount of overpayment can be refunded.
Births, Deaths and Marriages Error
- If we have made a mistake, the Registrar may offer to refund the fees involved.

If you believe you are entitled to a refund, please contact us, explaining why including your certificate/application reference number and contact details.
