Change of sex

Register a change of sex

You can register a change of sex if you were born in Tasmania, are not married and have undergone sexual reassignment surgery.

‘sexual reassignment surgery’ is a surgical procedure involving the alteration of a person's reproductive organs carried out for the purpose of assisting the person to be considered to be a member of the opposite sex; or to correct or eliminate ambiguities relating to the sex of the person.

You will need to provide:

  • the fee

If you send your original birth certificate with your application, we will send you an updated copy showing the new details. The certificate will have a notation at the bottom stating the original details.
