Gender registration

Register your gender (16 years and over)

You can apply to register your gender if your birth is registered in Tasmania.

How to apply

Step 1

Fill out and sign the: Gender registration for 16 years and over application form (PDF, 2.2 MB), which includes a gender declaration. If you are under 18 years you may be asked to provide evidence that you have undertaken counselling about whether to lodge an application and the implications of registering your gender.

Step 2

Attach evidence of identity documents.

Step 3

Pay the fee.

If you send your original birth certificate with your application, we will send you an updated copy. You can choose whether you want your gender included on the birth certificate and if you want your gender history included on the certificate.

You can only register your gender once in a 12 month period.

Processing time is approximately 2 weeks.

Please note: change of name is a separate process.

Register the gender of your child (under 16 years)

The parents or guardians of a child can apply to register their gender. The child’s birth must be registered in Tasmania.

One parent can apply if:

  • the applicant is the only parent on the birth record; or
  • the other parent is dead; or
  • the guardian is the only guardian of the child; or
  • the registration of gender is approved by a magistrate.

Step 1

Fill out and sign the: Gender registration for under 16 years application form (PDF, 2.2 MB), which includes confirmation that the registration is consistent with the will and preference of the child. The Registrar may also request evidence that counselling has been undertaken about whether to lodge an application and the implications of registering the chosen gender.

Gender registration appointments (optional)

You can come to Births, Deaths and Marriages at Rosny Park to lodge your application.  We want to make sure we have a staff member available to accept your application so please make an appointment in advance by phoning (03) 6165 3453.

Appointments usually take less than 15 minutes and will be conducted in a private interview room.

You can opt to complete an application form in advance or do it during the interview.  The BDM Officer will be able to witness you signing the application form and answer any questions you have about the details required.

Please bring the following to the interview:

  • The application form, if you have completed all or part of it in advance.  If you have not, we will give you a form at the interview.
  • Identification documents, including change of name certificate/s, if you have changed your name.
  • Any supporting documents you may wish to provide in relation to the reason for your application.
  • Your old Tasmanian birth certificate/s.  If you surrender an old certificate, we will exchange it for an updated copy after we have registered your gender (at no additional cost).

If you wish to register a change of name at the same time, you can lodge the form at the interview.  This is a separate form and an additional fee, but the paperwork can be lodged with your gender registration application.
