Exemptions

Exemptions from RWVP

You may not need to apply for a Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) if you qualify for an exemption.

Exemptions from RWVP include:

  • individuals under the age of 16
  • interstate workers who hold a registration in another state or territory for a similar regulated activity
  • close relatives of a vulnerable person or child (this does not apply to kinship carers)
  • police officers and correctional officers
  • school students on work experience placement or doing practical training
  • individuals participating in the same activity as vulnerable people (including children). For example, playing together in a sporting team
  • individuals whose only contact with a child is with their information records.

Important things to note:

  • An employer or volunteer organisation can still ask you to register even if you are exempt. See Section 9 of the Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Act 2013 for more information.
  • If you work or volunteer at an overnight camp for children, you are not exempt and must hold a RWVP.
  • You are only exempt in your professional role. For example, if you are a police officer who also volunteers for a local kids sporting team, you must apply for RWVP in your volunteer role.
  • If you are a teacher from interstate, you must be registered to work with vulnerable people in Tasmania before you can apply for a Tasmanian Teachers Registration. See the Teachers Registration Act 2000 for more information.
