Before you apply

1. Make sure you need a RWVP

Only people who work or volunteer in a regulated activity and engage with vulnerable people, including children, are likely to need Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP).

To see if you need to hold a RWVP, you should speak to your employer or see our:

2. Prepare the following information

Before you sit down to apply for or renew your RWVP, gather your proof of identity documents in front of you to make the process a breeze.

Then when you head to Service Tas to complete the process, and get your photo taken — don’t forget to take with you the same proof of identity documents you selected in your application!

See our proof of identity information for details the type of documents you must have. They can be the originals, or copies that you have had certified by a Justice of the Peace, Commissioner for Declarations or Notary Public.

You also need to have the following information ready before you start to apply:

  • your previous name and/or alias
  • your contact information (an email address and/or mobile number)
  • the address of every place you have lived at over the past 5 years. This must include the dates you lived at the addresses
  • the dates you lived overseas, if you have resided outside Australia for one year or more
  • details of any overseas offence history
  • details of any family violence orders, restraint orders, or apprehended violence orders taken out against you
  • details of any child protection orders you have been involved in
  • details of each organisation you will be working or volunteering for. This includes the name, address, contact person, phone number and email address.

If you are under the age of 18 and want to apply for RWVP, you must visit Service Tasmania with a legal guardian and/or parent. At Service Tasmania, your legal guardian and/or parent will be required to:

  • confirm their identity by providing the minimum proof of identity documentation
  • provide evidence of a link between you (the applicant) and themselves (the legal guardian and/or parent). For example, a birth certificate.

3. Make sure you apply for the right class

Classes of registration

There are two classes of registration that workers and volunteers can apply for. Each class has different conditions that you must meet to receive a RWVP.

  1. Employment/Volunteer: this is for workers and volunteers who get paid for their work
  2. Volunteer: this is for volunteers who do not get paid, receive material benefit or reward for their work

If you want to work or volunteer with vulnerable people under the National Disability Insurance Scheme in Tasmania, you must apply for an Employment/Volunteer class of RWVP with a NDIS Worker Check. This still applies even if you volunteer your time (that is, you do not get paid, receive material benefit or reward for your work).
