What to do before you apply
1: Make sure you need a RWVP
Only people who work or volunteer in a regulated activity and engage with vulnerable people, including children, are likely to need Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP). See our information on regulated activities to see if your work or volunteering falls into this.

2: Prepare the information you need
Before you apply, get the following information ready. This will make completing the online form easier.
- your previous name and/or alias
- your contact information (an email address and/or mobile number)
- the address of every place you have lived at over the past 5 years. This must include the dates you lived at the addresses
- the dates you lived overseas, if you have resided outside Australia for one year or more
- details of any overseas offence history
- details of any family violence orders, restraint orders, or apprehended violence orders taken out against you
- details of any child protection orders you have been involved in
- details of each organisation you will be working or volunteering for. This includes the name, address, contact person, phone number and email address.
3: Prepare your proof of identity documents
Before you apply, gather your proof of identity documents in front of you to make the process a breeze.
Then when you head to Service Tas to complete the process, and get your photo taken — don’t forget to take with you the same proof of identity documents you selected in your application! Your application receipt will list them for you.

4: Make sure you apply for the right class of RWVP
There are two classes of registration that workers and volunteers can apply for. Each class has different conditions that you must meet to receive a RWVP.
- Employment/Volunteer: this is for workers and volunteers who get paid for their work
- Volunteer: this is for volunteers who do not get paid, receive material benefit or reward for their work.
About the Volunteer Class:
- If you hold a Volunteer class of RWVP, it is an offence to receive payment or reward for your work in a regulated activity.
- If you are a paid worker, it is an offence to engage in regulated activities with a Volunteer class of RWVP.

What to do once you have applied
1: Keep your application receipt
Once you have completed the online application form, you will receive an application receipt by email. This will include a PDF that states:
- your application number. You will need this to log in to MyRWVP to manage your application. Your employer may also ask you for your application number ahead of you getting your RWVP number
- the three proof of identity documents you selected in your application
- the ‘next steps’ to complete your application: this involves going to a Service Tasmania service centre to verify your identity, and have your photo taken. This is explained below
- the date you must complete these actions by.
Your application will not be processed until you have completed these steps. Incomplete applications will expire after 21 days from the date on your receipt.
2: Go to a Service Tasmania service centre
When you go to a Service Tasmania service centre, you must:
- bring the same proof of identity documents you selected in your application, to have your identity verified
- have your photo taken
- pay the fee if you didn’t pay it within the online application form
- accept the Terms and Conditions if someone has completed the form on your behalf.
What happens next?
When you apply for a RWVP, you will undergo a background check and risk assessment. This is to make sure you are suitable to work or volunteer with vulnerable people, including children. See more information about the risk assessment process.
If you are granted a RWVP, you will receive a confirmation letter (we recommend you keep this along with your application receipt) and your RWVP card.
