Visit Times

The Tasmania Prison Service does not facilitate visits at prison facilities on Christmas Day.

Proof of identification must be provided at each visit (see our What to Expect When You Visit a Prison page for more information).

All visits are to be booked by the visitor by contacting:

Risdon Prison Complex

Visit Days:
Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday

*Wednesday - Prisoners accommodated in the Apsley Unit only 1.30pm

Visit Times:
Contact Visits (Prisoners accommodated in Medium and Derwent Accommodation Units)

9.30am (excluding Wednesday and Sunday), 1.30pm and 3pm

Prisoners Accommodated in the Apsley Unit

Wednesday 1.30pm and Sunday 9.30am

Visit Times:

Non-contact Visits  (Prisoners accommodated in Medium and Derwent Accommodation Units)

9.15am, 10.10am and 1.40pm

Non-contact Visits (Prisoners accommodated in the Huon Unit)

2.20pm

Non-contact Visits (Prisoners accommodated in the Tamar/Franklin Units)

Times available, duration of the visit and whether the visit is a contact or non-contact visit depends on the security rating of the prisoner.

While a maximum of six visitors are permitted for contact visits, there is only seating available in the visits area for three persons. Therefore, of the six visitors allowed per prisoner, three are to be aged under three years.

A maximum of three visitors are permitted for non-contact visits.

Ron Barwick Minimum Security Prison

Visit Days:
Monday - Sunday (7 days)
Visit Times:
10am, 11am, 1pm and 2.45pm

A maximum of three adults and four children permitted to visit.

Mary Hutchinson Women's Prison

Visit Days:
Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Visit Times:
9.30am, 10.40am, 2.00pm and 3.10pm

Times available, duration of the visit and whether the visit is a contact or non-contact visit depends on the security rating of the prisoner/detainee.

The maximum number of visitors during a visit to the Womens Prison is seven, consisting of three adults, and four children.

Hobart Reception Prison

Visit Days:
Monday - Sunday (7 days)
Visit Times:
10.15am (weekends only), 1.15pm, 2.30pm (weekends only)

Monday to Friday visits are non-contact only.

Saturday and Sunday visits are contact and non-contact.

Times available, duration of the visit and whether the visit is a non-contact or contact visit (Saturday and Sunday only) depends on the security rating of the prisoner/detainee.

The number of visitors is restricted to a maximum of five at any one time - either three adults and two children OR two adults and three children.

Launceston Reception Prison

Visit Days:
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday
Visit Times:
11.00am, 11.35am, 1.50pm, 2.25pm

All visits are 30 minutes in duration and are non-contact. Special approval may be given for a contact visit and depends on the security rating of the prisoner/detainee and is at the discretion of the Manager.

The number of visitors is restricted to a two adults and two children.
