Young people in custody

Young people detained in custody by Tasmania Police may be admitted to a watch-house and supervised by the Tasmania Prison Service pending interview, bail, or an appearance in court.

The Management of Young People in Custody Director's Standing Order 2.25 sets out the obligations of the Tasmania Prison Service under the Youth Justice Act 1997.

These provisions ensure the appropriate treatment of children and young people in custodial facilities and are intended to minimise any associated trauma, distress or harm in relation to searches of young people in custody.

All young people received into custody will be searched in accordance with the Youth Justice Act 1997. Prior to searching a young person, a risk assessment will be conducted to ensure a risk-based approach to searching young people, with a focus on trauma-informed practice to keep young people safe in our facilities.
