Anti-Discrimination and equality

Overview

Equal Opportunity Tasmania (EOT) is the office of the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner. EOT's aim is to foster a society free of discrimination, prejudice, bias and prohibited conduct. It is responsible for the investigation of complaints.

The Anti-Discrimination Commissioner may refer a complaint to the Anti-Discrimination Stream of the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT), after it has been investigated, and if it cannot be resolved by conciliation.

TASCAT conduct inquiries concerning complaints about conduct prohibited by the Act, and reviews decisions of the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner.

Anti-Discrimination Commissioner's role

The Anti-Discrimination Commissioner has an independent statutory role to administer the Anti-Discrimination Act 1998 (Tasmania). The Commissioner and their office:

  • investigate and help people resolve complaints about discrimination, sexual harassment and other prohibited conduct
  • inform and educate people about their rights and responsibilities under the Anti-Discrimination Act
  • promote practices that are non-discriminatory and free of bias
  • provide policy advice on programs, practices and laws to promote compliance with the Anti-Discrimination Act.

To make a complaint about discrimination (either for yourself or on behalf of someone else), organise anti-discrimination training for your workplace or school, and find posters and other guides about anti-discrimination, go to Equal Opportunity Tasmania’s website.
