Justices of the Peace (JP) and Commissioners for Declarations (CD) are volunteers who can sign documents that need an authorised witness.
Who can witness my document
JPs and CDs can sign documents that need an authorised witness.
Both JPs and CDs can
- witness signatures to document
- certify a true copy of an original document
- witness a statutory declaration.
Only a JP can
- certify a person's identity and
- witness an affidavit for use in court.
Not sure if you need a JP or CD? Check the signing page of your document. If it says ‘declare’, a CD can sign your document unless there are instructions requiring a JP.
