Commission for Children and Young People
The Tasmanian Government is establishing a new Commission for Children and Young People (CCYP), fulfilling an important recommendation made through the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings.
The CCYP will be responsible for a range of additional functions to strengthen Tasmania's oversight system and will serve as a strong advocate for young people.

Government's intention to repurpose the AYDC following its closure
On Tuesday 26 May 2026, the Hon Guy Barnett MP, Deputy Premier and Minister for Justice, Corrections and Rehabilitation announced the Government’s intention to repurpose the Ashley Youth Detention Centre site into a minimum-security adult prison and agriculture-based prisoner rehabilitation and training facility.
The transfer will occur after the site is vacated by the Department for Education, Children and Young People.

The first stage focuses on criminal and corrective justice, followed by civil justice, then Tasmania’s Tribunals.
