Working as a Probation Officer

Probation Officers:

  • help protect the community
  • supervise offenders on community based orders
  • address offending behaviours
  • provide opportunities for rehabilitation
  • ensure that offenders comply with court orders
  • work in collaboration with the Courts, Parole Board, Tasmania Prison Service and Tasmania Police

Probation Officers play an essential role in the Department of Justice's priority to reduce re-offending and maintain community safety.

Probation Officers can work across many different areas, including:

  • Supervision
  • Community Service Programs, and
  • Court Mandated Diversion Teams

What you will do

Your duties will vary and include:

  • case managing offenders
  • preparing reports for sentencing Judges, Magistrates and the Parole Board, and
  • working collaboratively with community stakeholders to support effective offender reintegration

As a Probation Officer with Community Corrections, you will:

  • conduct interviews and undertake assessments of offenders to provide accurate and timely advice to the Courts and the Parole Board
  • identify and explore offending behaviours to assist offenders in reducing their risk of re-offending
  • assess offender risks and needs, including criminogenic, personal and social needs, and
  • develop, implement and review Case Management Plans

Essential and desirable requirements

If you are successful in obtaining a job with Community Corrections, you will need to get a National Police Check from your local police station. We will accept current checks undertaken within the past 12 months.

It is desirable to have a relevant tertiary or industry qualification and a current driver's licence.
