Working as a Probation Officer
Probation Officers:
- help protect the community
- supervise offenders on community based orders
- address offending behaviours
- provide opportunities for rehabilitation
- ensure that offenders comply with court orders
- work in collaboration with the Courts, Parole Board, Tasmania Prison Service and Tasmania Police
Probation Officers play an essential role in the Department of Justice's priority to reduce re-offending and maintain community safety.
Probation Officers can work across many different areas, including:
- Supervision
- Community Service Programs, and
- Court Mandated Diversion Teams
What you will do
Your duties will vary and include:
- case managing offenders
- preparing reports for sentencing Judges, Magistrates and the Parole Board, and
- working collaboratively with community stakeholders to support effective offender reintegration
As a Probation Officer with Community Corrections, you will:
- conduct interviews and undertake assessments of offenders to provide accurate and timely advice to the Courts and the Parole Board
- identify and explore offending behaviours to assist offenders in reducing their risk of re-offending
- assess offender risks and needs, including criminogenic, personal and social needs, and
- develop, implement and review Case Management Plans

Essential and desirable requirements
If you are successful in obtaining a job with Community Corrections, you will need to get a National Police Check from your local police station. We will accept current checks undertaken within the past 12 months.
It is desirable to have a relevant tertiary or industry qualification and a current driver's licence.
