Name: Bas (short for Bastiaan)

Current role: Communications and Engagement Advisor, Child Abuse Royal Commission Response Unit

What is your area of expertise? My area of expertise includes creating engaging content, forming positive stakeholder relationships and guiding strategic communications planning.

How long have you worked at the Department of Justice (DoJ)? I have worked for DoJ for five and a half years.

What other roles have you undertaken at DoJ? I initially started my career as Policy Graduate with Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS) reviewing and amending consumer legislation. I then took on the role of Compliance Engagement Officer with CBOS advising on consumer law matters and acting as the contact for commercial lease disputes. I was then the successful applicant for the role of Communications Officer for CBOS. In that position, I administered the website and developed and modernised communications including the monthly digital newsletter.

What do you enjoy about working at DoJ? I enjoy the diversity of my work and the wide breadth of roles DoJ has enabled me to achieve in my career. Above all, I enjoy the friendships that I have gained.

What advice do you have for someone considering a career at DoJ? A career with DoJ can be fulfilling and rewarding - challenge yourself and put your hand up for the opportunities DoJ has to offer.
