Gift policy guide: Do I need to declare

DOJ staff should not expect to receive gifts, benefits or hospitality for doing a job they are paid by the public to do. In most situations, ‘thanks’ is enough.

You need to declare gifts, benefits or hospitality in certain circumstances.

Decline

If the gifts, benefits or hospitality would caues a conflict of intrest you must decline.

If the gifts, benefits or hospitality is a valuable object worth $100 or more you must decline.

Declare

If the gifts, benefits or hospitality is worth $50 or more you must declare.

If the gifts, benefits or hospitality is regularly given to you by the same person and it addes up to $100 or more in a year you must declare.

No need to declare

If the gifts, benefits or hospitality is a token memento or modest refreshment you don't have to declare.

If the gifts, benefits or hospitality is a worth less than $50 you don't have to declare.

Did you know?

All declarations over $100 must be publicly reported each quarter.
