Personal Searches
Youths detained in custody by Tasmania Police may be admitted to a watch-house and supervised by the Tasmania Prison Service pending interview, bail, or an appearance in court.
A risk assessment process is conducted prior to the searching of youth watch-house detainees. The risk assessment informs correctional officers of whether the youth presents a risk of harming them self or others, and the appropriate level of search required to mitigate that risk ranging from non-intrusive searching methods (such as a metal detector) to a personal search involving an unclothed search.
