Arrival and classification

Arriving at prison

When a person arrives at prison they are 'received' into custody.

Detailed information is obtained from them, and a range of assessments and interviews are conducted.

Property held on arrival is stored (in locked storage areas) by the Tasmania Prison Service (TPS) until the person is released.

Each new arrival is provided with clothing, bedding and a toiletries pack, and is allocated to a specific cell. Sometimes it is necessary for two people to share a cell until single cells become available.

Classification

A security classification system operates in the TPS.

A person may be classified as Maximum, Medium or Minimum Security.

Accommodation and level of privilege often depend on the classification level. A remandee or prisoner's classification level is determined by a classification panel, which includes staff from several areas within the TPS.
