The Solicitor’s Guarantee Fund (SGF) is a fund established under the Legal Profession Act 2007 that is derived mainly of interest generated by the monies standing to the credit of legal practitioner’s trust funds – that is, client funds being held, usually temporarily, by law firms.
The Solicitor’s Guarantee Fund does not hold government funds. Where the SGF exceeds a prescribed minimum amount, the Minister for Justice may approve grants of money for various programs or projects. Solicitor’s Guarantee Fund grants are distributed by the Minister on behalf of the Solicitor’s Trust.
In November 2024, the Attorney-General sought expressions of interest for funding from the SGF from eligible organisations. Applications closed on 13 December 2024, with 35 applications received, totalling over $9.3 million.
Applications were assessed by an independent assessment panel, and in May 2025, the Attorney-General approved a total of $4,495,216.96 in grants from the SGF for 18 initiatives.
