Parole Board Decision

In the matter of the Corrections Act 1997

and

In the matter of an Application for Parole by Jamie Eric WOULLEMAN

13 July 2007

Reason for Decision

On 13 December 2006 the Applicant was convicted of burglary and stealing.

In relation to the above crimes the Applicant was sentenced to a period of imprisonment of 24 months with a non-parole period of 12 months.

The Applicant is eligible for parole on the 26 July 2007.

On 13 July 2007 the Parole Board granted parole for the following reasons, taking into account the statutory criteria pursuant to the Corrections Act 1997:

  • The Applicant has satisfactory accommodation and the support of family members who believe he wishes to make changes in his life to preserve these family relationships. His prior unwillingness to change is altered to the extent that he states not to have used drugs for the past 12 months and he has an expressed willingness to attend drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselling courses
  • The Applicant has expressed a desire to obtain employment at one of the mines
  • The Applicant has a good prison record, particularly in recent months, and has completed the Parole Awareness program and has also taken part in the course ‘Preparing for Change.’
  • The Board has taken into account the Pre Parole report dated 13 June 2007
  • The Board has taken into account Justice Slicer’s statements on passing sentence including the fact that the Applicant pleaded guilty. It was also noted that he played a lesser role in one of the crimes than that of his co-offender and that he was, affected by medicine, drugs and alcohol. Nonetheless he had a significant history of committing similar crimes. Hence the length of sentence that was imposed. He is also required to pay compensation for these crimes.
  • It is the Parole Board’s belief that the Applicant’s rehabilitation will be better served out in the community. It will be a condition of his parole that he attends drug and alcohol counselling as decided appropriate by his probation officer and that he not use drugs or alcohol for the period of his parole.
