Electoral Commissioner of the Tasmanian Electoral Commission

The Tasmanian Government is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons for appointment as Electoral Commissioner of the Tasmanian Electoral Commission.

The Commission is an independent statutory authority established under the Electoral Act 2004. The Commission and the Electoral Commissioner have statutory responsibilities for the independent and impartial conduct of elections and referendums in Tasmania.

To be considered for appointment to this role, a candidate must not have been in the preceding 5 years:

  • a Member of a House of Parliament of the Commonwealth or a State or Territory; or
  • a member of a party that is registered under the Electoral Act 2004 or under an Act of the Commonwealth or another State or a Territory as a political party or a member of a similar organisation;

and must have:

  • high level analytical, conceptual and research skills that demonstrate a capacity to address complex situations within potentially demanding time frames, including a high level ability to understand, interpret and apply legislative provisions;
  • excellent communication skills, including the ability to provide sound advice and explain technical decisions to non-specialists;
  • proven ability to exercise discretion, sensitivity, initiative, integrity, impartiality and confidentiality and the ability to make fair, balanced and consistent decisions according to law without undue delay;
  • a sound knowledge and understanding of legislation relevant to the work of the Commission, including the Electoral Act 2004, or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge;
  • strong interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to consult, negotiate and provide advice and information to all stakeholders, including members of the public, as well as a range of stakeholders including Ministerial officers, senior Government officials and other statutory office holders; and
  • a commitment to the proper administration of electoral systems and with the ability to lead continuous improvement in the efficiency and timeliness of electoral practice, working collegially with Commission officers and effectively with others.
