Expression of Interest: Department of Justice Gender Respect and Fairness Community Reference Group

Community engagement and a collaborative approach is important to the design and delivery of services, and community engagement enables us to develop a better understanding of communities’ needs and aspirations.

The Department of Justice is committed to implementing workplace improvements and project insights that are informed by a diverse range of views and opinions from a broad cross-section of the community.

As the Department of Justice continues to progress equality, respect and fairness of all genders through its workplaces, policies and service provision, we recognise that we cannot do this work in isolation from the community that we live in and serve.  As such we are establishing a reference group that will contribute strategically and practically to the roll out of our Gender Respect and Fairness action plan.

There are sixteen positions available and the Department of Justice would like to provide an opportunity for people in our community, as well as those working in different levels and areas of the agency to be a part of our whole of agency Gender Respect and Fairness Reference Group. We would like to have eight of those positions filled by people in our community. Your commitment will be to join the 1.5 hour reference group meetings throughout the year on a quarterly basis to provide valuable advice and feedback on Gender Respect and Fairness at the Department. There are eight community positions available.

We are seeking people with lived experience of gender based violence, thought leaders, representatives from the community sector and others with self-taught or formal expertise on gender issues in Tasmania. The Department of Justice values the expertise and knowledge contained within our community and this group will be an opportunity for the Department to ensure we are delivering our services in the best interests of the community we serve.

While the agenda of each meeting will be dependent on the collaborative direction the group takes, key areas of focus will include:

  • legislative reform including legislation pertaining to violence against women,
  • embedding gender respect and fairness into policies and procedures within the Department including conditions such as family violence leave and parental leave,
  • changing workplace culture, and
  • development of targeted messages on workplace equality.

If you would like to be involved please send a brief email to Shannon Copelin (shannon.copelin@justice.tas.gov.au), outlining:

  • introductory information about yourself
  • addressing these questions:
    • why would you like to be involved in the Gender Respect and Fairness Reference Group?
    • what can you bring to the committee in terms of working towards increasing diverse and inclusive capabilities at the Department, and better serve the needs of the Tasmanian community?

Expressions of interest must be submitted by 5pm on 9 September 2022 to be considered. They will be reviewed according to the prevalence of subject matter expertise whether through working or volunteering history, lived experience, study in the field of gender inequality or involvement in community action.

For further information about the Reference Group, please contact Shannon Copelin on (03) 6165 7603 or email shannon.copelin@justice.tas.gov.au.
