Department of Justice Disability Community Reference Group

The Department of Justice values the expertise and knowledge contained within our community. Community engagement and a collaborative approach is important to the design and delivery of services. This helps us to develop a better understanding of our community's needs and goals.

The Department of Justice is committed to seeking a diverse range of views and opinions to inform our workplace improvements and projects. The Department has a Disability Reference Group made up of staff members and members of the community. This group ensures we are delivering our services in the best interests of the Tasmanian community.

This group contributes strategically and practically to the roll out of our People, Culture and Inclusion Disability Action Plan. Group members bring important perspectives and voices into the work we do to improve access and equity. This includes in our workplaces, in our policies, and in our service provision.

We are now seeking further members of the community for our Disability Reference Group. There are four community positions available to join the current group.

Your commitment will be:

  • to join the 1.5 hour reference group meetings throughout the year on a quarterly basis; and
  • to provide valuable advice and feedback to improve accessibility and disability awareness within the Department and in our service delivery.

We are seeking people with lived experience of disability, thought leaders, representatives from the community sector and others with self-taught or formal expertise on the issues that people with disability face in Tasmania.

While the agenda of each meeting will depend on the collaborative direction the group takes, key areas of focus will include:

  • ensuring fair recruitment and working conditions throughout an employee’s lifetime;
  • raising awareness and changing workplace culture;
  • development of targeted messages on disability; and
  • providing an avenue of feedback into future legislative reform.

If you would like to be involved, please send an expression of interest via a brief email to Shannon Copelin (shannon.copelin@justice.tas.gov.au). In your email please provide:

  • introductory information about yourself;
  • four or five dot points outlining:
    • why you would like to be involved in the Disability Reference Group; and
    • what you can bring to the committee to work towards increasing our diversity and inclusion capabilities at the Department for people with disability.

Expressions of interest must be submitted by 5pm on 31 January 2023 to be considered. Selection will be based on subject matter expertise through lived experience, working or volunteering history, and/or involvement in community action.
