Community Service project sites

Individuals sentenced to Community Service perform their hours in unpaid work. Work settings may be metropolitan or rural across a range of projects.

Community Corrections consider the following criteria for potential community service projects:

  • the project site is community based
  • community service is with a 'not for profit' organisation
  • Community Service will not take paid employment from others in the community
  • the project site provides reparation to the community through practical tasks
  • the capacity for ongoing and adequate supervision
  • the potential safety risks to the community
  • the activity can improve an individual's pro-social attitude and skills
  • engagement at the project site improves the interaction within the community
  • the project site is a safe working environment

Individuals may work for government agencies or local councils under suitable circumstances.

Offenders may also complete their hours by attending approved courses or programs.

Courses or programs usually target areas relevant to the individual's offences, such as:

  • alcohol and/or drug treatment
  • anger management programs
  • skills needed to get employment
