Custodial Inspector Bill 2016
The Government is currently seeking feedback on the Custodial Inspector Bill 2016.
The Bill provides for the independent oversight of prison operations in Tasmania through the establishment of the office of the Custodial Inspector. Specifically, the Bill provides for the oversight of Tasmania Prison Service facilities and the Ashley Youth Detention Centre.
The Bill also provides for:
- the mandatory inspection of custodial centres to be carried out at least once every three years;
- occasional inspections and reviews of custodial centres to be carried out at any time;
- the functions and powers of the Custodial Inspector and his or her staff;
- reporting requirements;
- offence provisions; and
- associated matters.
