A charter of victims' rights was signed by the United Nations in November 1985. Entitled "Declaration of Basic Principles of Justice for Victims of Crime and Abuse of Power", the charter has been adopted by some Australian states and a variety of community organisations in one form or another.
The Tasmanian Parliament is yet to formally adopt the charter as legislation, however the Victims Assistance Unit will continue to work with victims and the Government to ensure an appropriate Victims of Crime Charter is adopted in Tasmania.
