Draft Residential Development Strategy, November 2011

The draft Tasmanian Residential Development Strategy was prepared by the Office of the State Architect, with support from Housing Tasmania and the Housing Innovations Unit, on behalf of the Minister for Human Services, Cassy O’Connor MP.

The purpose of the draft Strategy is to support State and regional settlement strategies, and develop a broad vision for the provision of housing in Tasmania.

Tasmania is currently experiencing a housing shortage, and a lack of housing choice. A number of Tasmanians, particularly those on medium to low incomes, lack access to readily affordable housing, and are experiencing housing stress, which is being exacerbated by corresponding increases in the cost of living: including necessities such as, groceries, petrol and electricity.

This draft Strategy, which is consistent with the overarching objectives of the forthcoming Hobart Capital City Plan 2011-2040, and Regional Land Use Strategies, proposes mechanisms to not only increase the provision of housing in terms of numbers, but address issues of liveability and community. It adopts a long-term integrated approach to the planning and development of Tasmanian communities, and focuses on quality urban design as a catalyst for the achievement of social outcomes and the creation of more inclusive and sustainable communities.

All members of the community are invited to have their say on the draft Strategy.

All submissions, received no later than Friday 2 December 2011, will be considered during the finalisation of the Residential Development Strategy.
