Rules and regulations

The management of prisons is governed by legislation, Standing Orders and Standard Operating Procedures.

The Corrections Act 1997 and Corrections Regulations 1998 outline requirements for the management of custodial corrections in Tasmania.

Prison Service Standing Orders (issued by the Director of Prisons) are based on this legislation, and they contain statewide policy and procedural requirements.

Local prison guidelines are contained in Standard Operating Procedures.

If a prisoner fails to act in accordance with these requirements, they may be charged with a prison offence.
