Visiting a prison

  • If you have a family member or a friend in prison, you can visit them, but if you're under 18 years old you'll need to go with a parent or a guardian. You can find out more here.
  • If you want to visit a prison, an adult might have to make a booking for you.
  • When you arrive at a prison, if you're not sure where to go or what to do, just ask a staff member.
  • When you go into a prison you might have to walk through a metal detector - just like when you go to the airport.
  • When you visit a prisoner, you must take everything out of your pockets and leave your bag at the door. Your things will be looked after and kept safe until you leave the prison.
  • If you have something you want to give a prisoner (like photos or drawings), you should tell the staff at the gate and they can deliver things for you. Some things aren't allowed to be given to prisoners.

While you're visiting a prison, it's important that you follow any instructions given to you by a staff member.
