Directorate (Office of the Director of Prisons)

The Director of Prisons manages the statewide Prison Service in Tasmania.

The Director is responsible for all the areas listed below, and is Chair of the Prison Service Senior Management Team which includes senior representatives from all areas.

Corporate Services

The Corporate Services team provides corporate and administrative support across the Prison Service.

This includes services for staff such as:

  • financial management
  • mail handling
  • telephone switchboard
  • records management
  • administration reception
  • equipment purchasing

and services for prisoners such as:

  • food services
  • mail
  • money 
  • phone accounts
  • canteen

Corporate Services also includes a team of maintenance staff who are responsible for facility and equipment maintenance throughout the organisation.

Custodial Services

Custodial Services includes custodial managers and staff at all Tasmanian prison facilities (Hobart, Risdon, Hayes and Launceston), and also includes some administrative staff who provide support within prisons.

Custodial officers are responsible for managing prisoners in a safe and secure environment, and for providing prisoners with opportunities for rehabilitation and personal development.

Offender Services

The Offender Services team coordinates and delivers a range of services and programs to prisoners, including:

  • education
  • employment
  • programs addressing criminal behaviour
  • sport/recreation
  • hobbies
  • psychological services
  • chaplaincy
  • prisoner leave programs
  • family liaison

Policy & Staff Development

The Policy & Staff Development team is responsible for providing policy services across the organisation including: 

  • Standing Orders
  • Standard Operating Procedures
  • ministerial and executive briefings
  • reports
  • policy advice
  • prisoner complaints system
  • staff training and development - this includes the recruitment and induction of entry-level (recruit) custodial officers, as well as in-service staff training
