Becoming a grower
For almost half a century, the state of Tasmania has been the preferred location for poppy production in the Southern Hemisphere.
As a secure, fertile environment for cultivating poppies, Tasmania has unrivalled advantages. In the management, manufacture and export of opiates, Tasmania's reputation is unsurpassed.
Contracts and licences to grow poppies are negotiated based on world demand for the products.
Licences to grow the Papaver Somniferum plant are issued to farmers only after they have been contracted to grow and dispose of the crop (when harvested) to a licensed manufacturer.
Farmers must also have obtained a security clearance from Tasmania Police and provided a detailed plan of the cultivation site.
