Electricians, Gas-fitters, Mobile and Stationary Engine Gas-fitters and Plumbers trained in other countries should follow the steps below

Electricians

Provisional Licence

  1. Get an Off-shore Technical Skills Record by presenting your trade qualifications and work history to VETASSESS.  If in Australia get a Trades Recognition Service Assessment from Trades Recognition Australia.
  2. When in Tasmania contact TasTafe to get a training plan to bring your qualifications up to Australian standards
  3. Get work as a provisional electrician under the supervision of a licensed electrical contractor
  4. Select the provisional licence option when completing an Application for an Electrical Practitioner Licence (pdf, 252.8 KB)
  5. Lodge all documentation listed above at any Service Tasmania shop
  6. Provide proof of identity
  7. Pay the fee - $232.50
  8. Complete 12 months employment working to wiring standard AS/NZS 3000:2007 Electrical installations (known as the Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules)
  9. Undertake the Capstone Assessment (UEENEEG105A) from TasTafe. Do this towards the end of the provisional licence period.

Full licence

  1. After completing the training and experience requirements, complete an Application for an Electrical Practitioner Licence (pdf, 252.8 KB)
  2. Lodge all documentation at any Service Tasmania shop.  This includes copies of your Statement of Results from TasTafe and a letter from your employer confirming 12 months working under wiring standard AS/NZ 3000.
  3. Provide proof of identity
  4. Pay the fee - $325.50 (3 year licence)
  5. Your application will be processed within 21 days.  A letter will be sent out followed by a licence identity card in 10 to 14 business days.

Electricians only

Note: Before applying for a contractor licence, you must hold a practitioner licence for 12 months and complete the Electrical Contractor training course units with TasTafe.

Plumbing, Gas-fitting and –Mobile and Stationary Engine Gas-fitting*

  1. Get an Off-shore Technical Skills Record by presenting your trade qualifications and work history to VETASSESS.  If in Australia get a Trades Recognition Service Assessment from Trades Recognition Australia.
  2. When in Tasmania contact TasTafe to enter into a Training Agreement.  You will get a training plan to bring your qualifications up to Australian standards.
  3. Complete the assessments as required by TasTafe
  4. For a plumbing or gas-fitting practitioner licence, complete an Application for a Plumbing or Gas-fitting Practitioner licence (pdf, 252.8 KB)
  5. For a mobile and stationary engine gas-fitting practitioner licence, complete an Application for an Automotive Gas-fitting Practitioner licence (pdf, 214.8 KB)
  6. Lodge all documentation at any Service Tasmania shop along with a copy of your Statement of Results from TasTafe
  7. Provide proof of identity
  8. Pay the fee (refer to the fee schedule in the application form - there is an option to select 1 or 3 year licence)
  9. Your application will be processed within 21 days.  A letter will be sent out followed by a licence identity card in 10 to 14 business days.

* Mobile and stationery engine includes automotive gas-fitting.

Contractor / Self-employed

  1. To become a contractor and self-employed, it may be necessary to complete further training units.  To achieve certifier level in plumbing or gas-fitting, discuss this with TasTafe and complete the required courses.
  2. For a gas-fitting or plumbing contractor licence, complete an Application for a Contractor Licence form (pdf, 586.2 KB)
  3. For a mobile and stationary engine contractor licence, complete an Application for an Automotive Gas-fitting Contractor Licence form (pdf, 192.3 KB).
  4. Lodge all documentation including insurance Certificate of Currency at any Service Tasmania shop
  5. Pay the fee (refer to the fee schedule in the application form - there is an option to select a 1 or 3 year licence).
