Gratuitous work

Overview

Work for friends, relatives or community groups for no payment is called gratuitous work in the electrical, plumbing and gas-fitting trades.

Eligibility

You must be licensed to do gratuitous work in electrical, plumbing and gas-fitting trades.

A contracting licence is not required as it is not considered to be contracting.

An electrical practitioner is able to undertake work for no payment without the need for the involvement of a contractor or without having a contractor licence (for example doing some work for their local soccer club).

Licence holder must be at Tasmanian Plumber Certifier level (Plumbing Practitioners are not able to carry out gratuitous work) .

Checklist

  1. Indicate on the Electrical Installation Notice (EIN) or the Certificate of Electrical Compliance (CEC) that it is Gratuitous Work prior to lodging the EIN/CEC (Electrical only)
  2. Complete Gratuitous Work Form (pdf, 454.8 KB) and lodge the paperwork with Gas Standards and Safety Unit by:
    1. email to cbosinfo@justice.tas.gov.au or
    2. post to Consumer, Building and Occupational Services, PO Box 56, Rosny Park, TAS, 7018, so your form can be assessed (plumbing and gas-fitting only)
  3. No work is to commence until you receive a letter from CBOS which will be sent within 14 business days (plumbing only)
  4. No work is to commence until you receive a letter from CBOS which will be sent within 7 business days (gas-fitting only)
  5. Contact Building Surveyors, Councils, TasWater and/or any relevant Authorities to arrange approval before commencing work (plumbing only)
  6. Have at least $5 million cover Public Liability and Products Liability insurance
  7. Keep records of the work for ten years (including insurance)
  8. Lodge the paperwork with Gas Standards and Safety Unit by:
    1. email to cbosinfo@justice.tas.gov.au or
    2. post to Consumer, Building and Occupational Services, PO Box 56, Rosny Park, TAS, 7018, so your form can be assessed (plumbing and gas-fitting only)
  9. Lodge the paperwork with the regulators / authorities (plumbing only)
