Builder licence

Overview

A Builder carries out work in construction, demolition, alteration, addition, relocation or repair of any building.

An accredited Construction Manager is the person responsible for managing building work done on a building site or a building later placed on site.

An accredited Fire Protection Services Builder means the person responsible for fire protection services building work done on a building site or a building later placed on site.

An accredited Demolisher means the person responsible for demolition building work conducted on a building site.

Categories and classes

Licensing for builders is broken into four categories

  1. Builder
  2. Construction Manager
  3. Fire Protection Services Builder
  4. Demolisher

There are three (3) classes of work within each category

  1. Low rise
  2. Medium rise
  3. Open

Before you start your application

Eligibility

To hold a builder’s licence you must have a minimum qualification

  1. Low rise - Cert IV (in the chosen class) -2 years with a building trade qualification and 4 years without a building trade qualification
  2. Medium rise - Diploma (in the chosen class) - 2 years with a building trade qualification and 4 years without a building trade qualification
  3. Open - Advanced Diploma of (in the chosen class) or a degree - 3 years with a building trade qualification and 6 years without a building trade qualification.

  5. Scan and save (computer or storage device like a USB) a digital copy of your certificate of currency insurance
    1. Builder, fire protection services and demolisher $5 million
    2. Construction Manager needs professional indemnity insurance
      1. $500,000 low rise
      2. $750,000 medium rise
      3. $1 million open
  6. Contract works insurance is needed for a builder when working on a project and may be taken out on an annual or a project-by-project basis.
  7. Applicants may need to attend an interview
  8. Scan and save (computer or storage device like a USB) a digital copy of your Statement of Experience (pdf, 106.7 KB) (new application only) This should be in a summary form and include:
    1. a list of projects you have worked on
    2. dates
    3. project size in square metres
    4. number of storeys
    5. your role and a third party's contact details for verification
  9. Scan and save (computer or storage device like a USB) a digital copy of two Referee Statements (pdf, 561.5 KB) from past employers confirming the class of work you have applied for (new application only)
  10. You will need to confirm that you have completed Continuing Professional Development (CPD) (renewal only)
  11. Have a credit card ready to pay for your licence fee online or at any Service Tasmania shop

If your application is successful, you will receive confirmation within 21 days.

Declaration

If you answer ‘yes’ to any of the questions below, you will need to provide details and copies of all relevant documentation.

  1. Have you in the last 10 years been convicted of a criminal offence (other than a minor traffic offence) or are any court proceedings pending?
  2. Have you ever been disqualified from holding a licence or registration as a building services provider or have you had any occupational licence or certificate cancelled or suspended (including interstate licences, certificates or registrations)?
  3. In respect of any work you have done in an equivalent position, have you ever been fined, reprimanded or cautioned for any breach of rules, professional conduct or code of ethics?
  4. Have you been declared bankrupt or entered into an arrangement with creditors in the last 10 years?
  5. Have you, in the past 10 years, been a Director, Secretary or a person in a position to control or substantially influence a company's conduct or affairs within 12 months of that company being placed in receivership, administration, official administration, under a deed of company arrangement, in liquidation or wound up for the benefit of creditors?

Step 4. Have a photo taken for your licence card at any Service Tasmania shop and prove your identity

Step 4. If your licence photo has expired, have a photo taken at any Service Tasmania shop
