The Minister for Planning has recently contracted two independent consultants to undertake an assessment and review of the Gunns Limited Pulp Mill proposal, pursuant to the Pulp Mill Assessment Act 2007.
SWECO PIC was appointed to undertake an assessment of the project against the Environmental Emission Limit Guidelines for any New Bleached Kraft Eucalypt Pulp Mill in Tasmania.
ITS Global was appointed to provide a review of the net social and economic benefits of the proposed mill.
Both Consultants’ reports were received by the Minister for Planning on 29 June 2007 and were publicly released by the Premier on 5 July 2007.
All reports and supporting information are available for download from this website.
Section 6(9) of the Act requires the consultants’ reports and the Pulp Mill Permit to be laid before each House of Parliament by no later than 31 August 2007.
‘Relevant Persons’ will take both reports into consideration when preparing the licence and approval conditions to be recommended to the Minister for Planning for inclusion in the Pulp Mill Permit.
The Pulp Mill Permit and both reports will be tabled in Parliament on 21 August 2007. Parliament will then have five sitting days to accept or reject the Permit.
